7500 - first post

Project ideas are running through my head.  If I understand the assignment correctly, I need to design a three day lesson that integrates technology in a meaningful manner.

I work as an elementary math specialist at an elementary school in Gwinnet County.  I also provide instructional support/coaching to the classroom teachers at my school.

Understanding the language of any subject is important to the mastering of the subject.  Mathematics is no exception.  Often, I find that students can complete basic calculations and algorithms but are unable to hold a conversation about mathematics.  In the past, I've worked with students on compiling personalized vocabulary books/journals.  These journals have been hand written with pictures that were cut and pasted from a variety of print material.  I think it would be great for the students to create powerpoint slides to illustrate different math terms and concepts.  These slides could be compiled into a grade level vocabulary ppt. show.  These "shows" could be stored on the school share drive and accessed by teachers and students for vocabulary review.  Additionally, they could be shown on the school's closed circuit channel during the school day.

The students would need to provide a definition for the word/concept and a visual representation on the slide.  I believe this could qualify as LOTI 4 if I allow the students to choose 3 words from their grade level to create slides for.  This choice forces them to reflect on their current knowledge of math vocabulary and choose something they want/need to learn.

The Beginning

Rain!  As I put together my blog page I thought I heard the wonderful sound of rain on my windows.  Being a bit hard of hearing, I thought I was mistaken until the tap tap tap became a slap slap slap.  My husband, Scott, and I about knocked each other over trying to get to the deck door to see if indeed it was raining.  One whiff of the air yielded the sweet smell of a summer storm.  Love that smell, love that sound, and love that my outside plants are getting a long drink of water.
