7500 - first post

Project ideas are running through my head.  If I understand the assignment correctly, I need to design a three day lesson that integrates technology in a meaningful manner.

I work as an elementary math specialist at an elementary school in Gwinnet County.  I also provide instructional support/coaching to the classroom teachers at my school.

Understanding the language of any subject is important to the mastering of the subject.  Mathematics is no exception.  Often, I find that students can complete basic calculations and algorithms but are unable to hold a conversation about mathematics.  In the past, I've worked with students on compiling personalized vocabulary books/journals.  These journals have been hand written with pictures that were cut and pasted from a variety of print material.  I think it would be great for the students to create powerpoint slides to illustrate different math terms and concepts.  These slides could be compiled into a grade level vocabulary ppt. show.  These "shows" could be stored on the school share drive and accessed by teachers and students for vocabulary review.  Additionally, they could be shown on the school's closed circuit channel during the school day.

The students would need to provide a definition for the word/concept and a visual representation on the slide.  I believe this could qualify as LOTI 4 if I allow the students to choose 3 words from their grade level to create slides for.  This choice forces them to reflect on their current knowledge of math vocabulary and choose something they want/need to learn.

  1. Love this idea. At first, I thought to myself "You're going to have elementary kids work with PowerPoint?", but then it really wouldn't surprise me with kids this day and age to be fluent with any type of technology, simple or complex.

Also, I really like the idea of compiling the slides to be shared and reviewed by other teachers. I believe collaboration between teachers is very necessary!

Would you have students present their own slides first to their classmates? Maybe this can give them the opportunity to become the "teacher" for a moment. Or maybe you could make the presentation interactive where the student puts the word or symbol on the slide and has other students raise their hand and give the answer or definition.

    Good job:)

  2. Great idea! I really like the idea of elementary students taking ownership of their own vocabulary learning. I think integrating technology (via ppt slides) is a great idea and will help reinforce the learning. Could these slides be put into a Wiki or shared database for future use?

  3. Jeanine,
These slides will be stored on the school share drive to allow local access. On a county level, perhaps the best of the best could be housed on the GCPS MOCC site. Something to think about for sure.

  4. I like this idea very much. I have a hard time thinking about how math teachers can incorporate technology into their classrooms, but this idea is excellent! I think that you have the right elements to make a LoTi level 4 or higher lesson based on your idea. I'm anxious to see how it develops!
